Zinc Deficiency

New growth comes in small, narrow and twisted with tight node spacing and yellowing between the veins. Distortion is the giveaway.

Zinc deficiency is a shortage of a trace element the plant uses to produce the hormones that control leaf expansion and stem elongation. It is the deficiency that changes the shape of the plant rather than just the color.

What you are seeing

New growth at the top, exclusively. Zinc is immobile.

New leaves emerge small and narrow, often with wavy or crinkled edges, and they twist or bend rather than opening flat. Yellowing appears between the veins on those new leaves while the veins stay green.

The real tell is spacing. The distance between nodes on the newest growth collapses, so the top of the plant bunches up into a tight rosette of small twisted leaves stacked on top of each other. The plant looks like it stopped stretching and started compressing.

In flower, new bud sites may stall and pistils can look sparse. Older leaves lower down stay green and normal sized.

Why it happens

Zinc becomes unavailable above roughly pH 6.5 in soil and 6.2 in coco and hydro. It is also directly antagonized by phosphorus, so heavy bloom boosters cause it routinely.

Beginner causes:

  • pH creeping high from alkaline tap water.
  • Overdosing a PK or bloom booster in weeks three to six of flower.
  • Reverse osmosis water with a nutrient line that has no micronutrient package.
  • Soilless mixes like peat or coco with no trace element charge.
  • Overwatering, which reduces uptake of all micronutrients.

How to fix it

  1. Measure runoff pH today and bring it into 6.0 to 6.5 in soil or 5.6 to 6.0 in coco and hydro. Aim low within the range, because zinc availability improves as pH drops.
  2. Stop any bloom booster or extra phosphorus product immediately. This is the second most common cause and it is self-inflicted.
  3. If you are on reverse osmosis water, switch to a base nutrient with a full micronutrient package, or add a trace element supplement at label rate.
  4. Water less often. Let the pot get light before the next watering so the root zone gets oxygen.
  5. Over the next week, keep everything else steady. Trace element problems are easy to overcorrect, and zinc toxicity is worse than zinc deficiency.

How to tell it apart

Versus iron deficiency. Both hit new growth with interveinal yellowing, and this is the confusion that costs people a week. The discriminator is shape, not color. Iron deficiency produces normal sized, normally shaped leaves that happen to be yellow, with normal node spacing. Zinc deficiency produces small, narrow, twisted leaves bunched at short intervals. If the top of the plant looks compressed and deformed, it is zinc.

Versus manganese deficiency. Manganese also yellows between veins on new leaves but adds dead tan flecks and speckles, and it does not deform the growth or shorten node spacing. Marks without distortion means manganese. Distortion without many marks means zinc.

Versus calcium deficiency. Both deform new growth. Calcium produces rust brown necrotic spots on leaves that are otherwise a normal green, and can kill the growing tip outright. Zinc produces yellowing between veins with little or no necrotic spotting, and the tip survives but stops elongating. Look for spots: present means calcium, absent means zinc.

Versus pH lockout. These are usually the same problem. Zinc is one of the first elements to lock out as pH climbs past 6.5 in soil.

How long until it looks better

The twisted, undersized leaves are permanent. They will not straighten out or grow to full size, and you should leave them alone rather than plucking them, since they still photosynthesize.

You are judging entirely by what emerges next. Within seven to ten days of correcting pH and removing excess phosphorus, new leaves should come in full sized, flat and evenly green, and node spacing should return to normal. That new normal growth sitting above a knot of small twisted leaves is what a successful fix looks like. If the top is still bunching after two weeks, recheck runoff pH rather than adding more product.
