Low Humidity Stress

Taco-shaped leaves and crispy tips when the tent runs dry. Target humidity by stage, and how to tell dry air from heat or thirst.

  • Barely growing

Low humidity stress is what happens when the air pulls water out of the leaves faster than the roots can replace it. The plant closes its stomata to defend itself, and while they are closed it stops growing.

What you are seeing

Leaf edges curling upward along the length of the leaf, making a canoe or taco shape. This is the plant reducing its exposed surface area, and it is the clearest early sign.

Then dry tips. The ends of the leaf blades go pale, then tan, then crisp and brittle, and they crumble if you rub them. Edges follow.

Growth slows without anything obviously wrong. The plant is green, the leaves are not spotted or yellow, and yet it barely gets bigger week over week. Seedlings and fresh clones are hit hardest because they have almost no root system to keep up. You will also notice pots drying much faster than they used to.

The only way to actually diagnose this is a hygrometer at canopy height, not on the tent floor and not in the room outside. Below 40 percent in veg, or below about 35 percent in flower, is where problems start.

Why it happens

Winter indoor air is the usual culprit. Heated rooms routinely sit at 20 to 30 percent humidity, and a tent pulling that air through an exhaust fan sits there too.

Other causes: an oversized exhaust fan at full speed, changing the tent air faster than the plants can humidify it. An air conditioner or dehumidifier in the room. A few small plants in a big tent, since the plants themselves are the main source of humidity in a grow space. And an LED close to the canopy, which raises leaf temperature and drives transpiration even when air temperature reads fine.

How to fix it

  1. Put a hygrometer at canopy height and read it at both lights on and lights off before changing anything.
  2. Hit the target for your stage. Seedlings and clones 65 to 70 percent. Vegetative 50 to 65 percent. Early flowering 45 to 55 percent. Late flowering 40 to 45 percent and no higher, because bud rot is the bigger risk from that point on.
  3. Turn the exhaust fan down. A speed controller is 20 dollars and is usually the whole fix. You need enough exhaust to control heat and no more.
  4. Add a humidifier sized for the space. A 1 gallon unit handles a 2x2 or 2x4. Put it outside the tent blowing in through the intake so it does not add heat inside.
  5. For seedlings and clones, use a humidity dome or a clear cup over the top. It is free and works better than anything else at that size.
  6. Raise the light a few inches if leaves feel warm to the back of your hand. Leaf temperature drives water loss more than air temperature does.
  7. Water on weight, not schedule, while you correct this. A plant in dry air drinks noticeably more.

How to tell it apart

Versus heat stress. These look nearly identical, because both curl leaf edges upward, and they usually happen together. The discriminator is two readings. Over 85F at canopy height with humidity above 45 percent is heat. Under 80F with humidity below 40 percent is dry air. Heat stress also concentrates on the tops directly under the light, while low humidity affects the whole plant evenly.

Versus underwatering. Underwatering hangs the entire leaf down limp from the stem and the pot is light. Low humidity curls the edges up while the leaf stays firm and the pot may still be wet. Lift the pot first.

Versus wind burn. Wind burn claws leaves downward and only in the fan's direct path, with undamaged leaves inches away. Low humidity is even across every leaf on every plant in the tent, which is what an air problem looks like.

How long until it looks better

Curling relaxes within 24 to 48 hours of getting humidity into range, faster for a seedling under a dome.

Crisped tips and edges do not come back. That tissue is dead and stays brown until the leaf drops, so there is no point watching the damaged leaves.

Growth is the honest measure. A stalled plant should visibly put on new nodes within 5 to 7 days of the correction. If the tent reads 55 percent, the temperature is normal, and it still is not growing after a week, the problem was never humidity and you should be looking at pH, root health or feed.
