pH, And Why Most First Grows Stall Here

Nutrient lockout looks exactly like a deficiency, so beginners feed more and make it worse. Here is the pH range to hold, how to test it, and how to fix it.


Somewhere around week four or five, a lot of first grows stop looking healthy. Lower leaves go yellow, new growth gets small and pale, tips burn, and the plant that was putting out a new node every few days just sits there.

The instinct is to feed it. That is almost always the wrong move, and it is why so many first grows stall at exactly this point.

What is usually happening is that the food is already in the pot and the plant cannot pick it up, because the pH of the water going in is outside the range where roots can absorb nutrients. Growers call it lockout. Adding more fertilizer to a locked out plant makes the problem worse, because now you also have salt buildup.

This page is the fix, and it is not complicated. It is just the single most skipped step in beginner growing.

What pH is actually doing

pH is a 0 to 14 scale measuring how acidic or alkaline a solution is. Seven is neutral. Below that is acidic, above is alkaline.

Cannabis roots do not absorb every nutrient equally at every pH. Each element has a band where it is chemically available and bands where it locks up and sits in the soil, present but useless. Iron goes unavailable in alkaline soil. Phosphorus and calcium get hard to reach when things go acidic.

So the number you are managing is not really "acidity." It is "which of the fourteen or so elements in the pot can the plant actually reach today."

That table is a starting point, not a diagnosis. Deficiency symptoms overlap, and pH is the first thing to rule out because it causes so many of them at once.

The range to hold

In soil, aim for water going in at 6.3 to 6.8. The wider tolerable range is 6.0 to 7.0, and soil has some natural buffering, which is a real advantage over other media.

If you are in coco coir or any hydro setup, the target drops to 5.5 to 6.5, and there is no buffer to save you. That is exactly why this site pushes soil for a first grow.

Some growers deliberately drift within the range, running 6.2 one watering and 6.8 the next, on the theory that different elements peak at different points. It is a real technique with real supporters. Skip it on grow one. Hit 6.5 every time and remove one variable.

Measuring it without fooling yourself

You need a digital pH pen. Twenty to thirty dollars, and it should come with calibration solution (usually two little packets marked 4.0 and 7.0).

Paper strips are not accurate enough. They tell you 6 or 7, and the difference between 6.2 and 6.9 is exactly what you are trying to see. Liquid drop kits beat strips, but reading color against a chart in tent light is miserable. Buy the pen.

Calibrate it the day it arrives, then every two to four weeks after. A pen that has drifted still gives you a confident three digit number, which is worse than having no pen at all, because you will trust it.

Store the pen with the little sponge in the cap wet, using storage solution if it came with any, plain tap water if not. Dry probes die.

The order of operations

  1. Fill your watering container and let it sit out for 12 to 24 hours if you are on chlorinated city water. This lets chlorine gas off. Chloramine does not evaporate, but at municipal levels it is not going to kill your plant.
  2. Mix in nutrients, if you are feeding this watering. Do this before you check pH, because nutrients change the pH, usually pushing it down.
  3. Stir, then read.
  4. Adjust with pH Up or pH Down. These are cheap, a small bottle of each runs about fifteen dollars total and will last through several grows. They are strong: use drops, not glugs, stir, and re-read.
  5. Read one more time. Then water.

Do not adjust pH with lemon juice, vinegar or baking soda. They work for about an hour and then the pH wanders back, which gives you the swings you were trying to avoid.

Reading runoff, and the argument about it

Runoff is the water that comes out the bottom of the pot. Catch some, test its pH and, if you have a TDS or EC meter, its dissolved solids.

The idea is that runoff tells you what is happening in the root zone, not just what you poured in. If you are feeding at 6.5 and runoff comes back at 5.4, something in the pot has gone acidic and the plant is in trouble regardless of your input number.

Growers genuinely argue about this. The objection is that runoff picks up whatever is sitting in the bottom of the pot and does not represent the whole root zone, so chasing runoff numbers sends people on wild goose chases. That objection is fair.

Here is the call: do not test runoff routinely on your first grow. Test it when the plant looks wrong. If input is 6.5 and runoff is way off, you have learned something real. Otherwise you are collecting numbers you do not know how to act on.

Fixing a plant that is already locked out

If you are reading this because a plant already looks sick, the move is a flush.

Run three times the pot's volume of clean, pH'd 6.5 water through it slowly. For a three gallon pot that is about nine gallons. Take your time so it soaks rather than channeling straight down the sides.

This dissolves accumulated salts and resets the root zone pH. Expect the pot to be heavy and stay wet for a while. Do not feed at all on the next watering. Give the plant plain 6.5 water and let it dry back to where the pot feels light before you water again.

Recovery is not instant. New growth should look normal within five to seven days. The damaged leaves will not turn green again, and that is fine. Leaves are not the product.

What this looks like when it is working

You water at 6.5, the plant drinks, and in a few weeks nothing dramatic happens. No burnt tips, no yellowing march up the plant, just steady new growth.

That is the whole goal. pH is not a thing you optimize. It is a thing you stop getting wrong, and then you get to think about the parts of growing that actually increase your yield.
